Even as local music lovers are soaking up the transformation of Guyanese songstress Timeka Marshall singing and acting abilities, the local diva is heading closer to the number one spot on the RE-tv charts with her 'all night' sensual video. The local catwalk beauty's combination video 'Hush' with Peetah Morgan of the Morgan Heritage clan is also making the rounds and has also entered the RE-tv charts.The GT&T inaugural Cell Link Jingle winner recently completed promotional tours to Trinidad and Barbados and is currently in Jamaica working on yet another video; this time with Busy signal. That video will be filmed in June for launching in time for summer.RE-tv is viewed by millions in the Caribbean, Japan and the USA.Timeka entered the charts at number eight and was at number 3 last week. Jessica Xavier Ready To Boost Her Music Career !

GUYANA LIME is once again proud to promote another vibrant and upcoming artiste, Jessica Xavier. Jessica Xavier, a twenty four year old Guyanese born and former student of St. Roses and Bishops’ High is quickly becoming Guyana’s next top idol in the music industry. Ms. Xavier is no stranger to the spot light for she has dazzled the crowds in her recent participation at the Peace Fest 2009 Concert as well as many different Charity Functions, especially in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and The Georgetown Rotary Club.
Jessica Xavier has always been interested in the world of music and admits that she has always been eager to create some sort of positive effect on people and singing was just one of her many talents that allowed her to be heard. Speaking with GUYANA LIME recently, Ms. Xavier admitted that she has always been passionate about music ever since her childhood days.

“The way people write, the way certain songs and singers evoke emotions from within us, I have always been fascinated by that ever since I was a little girl. I had a habit of just lying on the floor and listening to music and to this day I can’t function without it. My Ipod is my new best friend!” says Jessica.

During her interview with GUYANA LIME, Jessica conveyed that she gained her inspiration to start singing from her best friend who passed away a year ago of Cancer and who had always encouraged her to sing. She added that her friend’s passing somehow motivated her to take the first step and earned her the recognition she has today.
When questioned about where she gets her inspiration to write songs, Jessica stated that her inspiration is derived from so many things and as such depending on the mood and the circumstance, inspiration for her, is possible at anytime. Jessica truly believes that music has a profound effect on people when they listen to it and her ultimate goal is to try and create a positive vibe and sound that people can relate to when they listen to her songs.
Apart from singing, Jessica also writes the majority of her songs as well as work along with Danley Major, CEO of KF Record Productions and Mr. Brian Cummerbatch. Regarding her popular single “Don’t Cry”, Jessica noted that she wrote this song two years ago for a relative and this song tells a story of a young woman losing her love, and the only comfort she finds is in his memory, his things.

“The phrase “Don’t cry” is almost the assurance; when there’s nothing else to say just to let someone know “It’s going to be ok” says Jessica.

Ms. Xavier is certainly taking significant strides in boosting her talent and does intend to pursue singing professionally. She is currently working on two singles “Shy” and “Little One” which are expected to hit the air waves soon. She also encourages other young upcoming artistes like herself to hold on to their goals and dreams.

“You’ve got dreams and you’ve got goals, hold on to them, there’s nothing that you can’t do. You have to be driven and motivated as well. Music is about discipline. About finding your sound and enhancing it. Read about music. Learn about the history of the type of music you love. Also, you will have to deal with many negatives, but embrace them because they are always followed by the positives! Through it all, just never lose who you are.”

When questioned on her views of negative criticism, Ms. Xavier explained that she doesn’t see anything as negative, because it only makes a person stronger as a performer and an individual.

She also noted that “People will always have bad things to say, but it’s up to you, to decide if you’ll let it affect you or not. I have always been told, “Listen to the negatives but hold on to the positives.” Being human, naturally, it will affect you sometimes, but I try to keep positive in most situations.”

Although Jessica tries not to focus too much on what the future holds for her she does hope that her music career gains the appreciation of the Guyanese audience and the rest of the world in the future. With her dedication and passion for music, she certainly has the potential to fulfill her desires in the near future. Certainly, Jessica Xavier will be making a name for herself in the music industry, whether she takes small steps in getting there but she will succeed in spreading her positive vibes through her simply amazing talent; with a voice that can only be described as truly angelic.

Exclusive Interview With Timeka Marshall

Why did you enter the music industry? "It had always been a dream of mine to become a singer and after winning the GT&T Cellink Plus Jingle competition it gave me an extra push that I needed. "

Where do you get your inspiration from? "Inspiration for me comes from just about anything. My personal life plays an important part, friends and family experiences and just daily life, for example I may see something (lets say a colour) and it evokes a feeling in me and an idea just comes to mind."

Who is managing your career at the moment? "My manager is Kerwin Bollers. My management team is Pyramid Music Group and Headline Entertainment who does my bookings also does part management."

When can we expect an album? "I'm working on some singles for now and the album will come afterwards....No specific timing for that as yet."

What are you currently working on? "I am working with some producers from Jamaica namely Shane Brown- Juke Boxx, Stephen Magregor- Big Ship and Equiknoxx just to name a few. Working on some collaborations, actually I recently collaborated with Busy Signal on a song I plan drop soon. I'm also doing promotions for my 2nd video "ALL NIGHT" and my most recent video "HUSH" which is a video collaboration with Peter Morgan from the group Morgan Heritage."

Where do you see yourself ten years from now? " Ten years from now I'd like to be signed to a major record label, have a number of successful albums and endorsement deals, travelling the world on tour and just being happy with life."

If you could do anything other than music what would it be and why? "If not music I would take up modeling since I've always loved the catwalk and love doing photoshoots. I'm also interested in directing maybe even some acting. Who knows..... just about anything I can see myself having fun while doing."

If you could collaborate with any other artiste, who would you choose? "I'm a big fan of Lil Wayne, T- pain, the Marleys, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Beyonce and Alicia Keys. I would be thrilled to do a collab with any of them."

What are some of your beauty tips and how do you manage to keep in shape ? "I wont say I have beauty tips but they are a few things I do that I hear are good..... I drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruits and stay away from soft drinks. I also cleanse, tone and moisturise my face daily and i wrap my hair every night to get a nice bounce and flow. I treat/steam my hair regularly and never blow dry. I won't say I'm in shape but I'm a member of the gym and love lifting weights."

What message do you have for young upcoming singers like yourself ? "To young upcoming artistes I'd say, develop a thick skin because with the good compliments comes the negative and not everyone will have something good to say about you, but just stay true to yourself, keep your head on and keep on believing in yourself. "

Did you always want to have your own TV Show?

"It was not something I longed for or even dreamt about but I could not turn my back on the issues affecting women. Women across Guyana are abused daily and many of them stay in these relationships because they believe they have no alternative or because they simply don’t know what the next step would be, so I decided to assist by doing what I thought would be most effective and that’s how the show started. Many persons see television show hosts as “attention seeking egotistical jerks” but I did this out of genuine compassion for other women.

How has your show evolved since you first started hosting to now?

"The show started when I was Editor of News 2 so based on a professional decision it was aired on Channel 2. I knew I wasn’t getting the desired target audience so I added Channel 67 to the medium for getting the show out. When I resigned from my post as Editor of News 2 to become a public relations consultant the show moved with me. It is now aired on Channel 72 and it has now been extended regionally and internationally. The show is now on CaribVision which is broadcasted around the Caribbean and parts of the US."

Being in the spotlight, how do you deal with negative criticism?

"Well…there is never a time when negative criticism doesn’t affect you. But you can use negative criticism to improve yourself or to even make you a stronger person and that’s what I do. I’ve also grown accustomed to this since I’ve done pageants also and pageant queens and delegates come second to politicians when it comes to being criticized."

Rumor has it, that you are planning on tying the knot soon, tell us more....

"Ummmm…that depends on how soon “soon” is . I have been in a relationship for about 5 years so I’m not at all surprised about the rumors about wedding bells ."

When you're not infront of the camera,what else are you up to?

"You might not believe it but work, work and even more work. I have a very demanding job and I am constantly reminded that I have to focus on other aspects of my life; even the show is often affected by my job. But I enjoy spending time with my family and my boyfriend. I also love dancing so you’ll definitely see me at concerts or occasional parties having fun."

What do you dislike about yourself?

"My inability to say NO. People often ask favors and I really can’t say no. I always make promises and very often I am not able to fulfill them ."

What is your fashion style ?

"I like to do me. I often go for really unique glamorous outfits. I love shoes; I have them in all styles and colours. I DO NOT WEAR SNEAKERS."

What is the greatest advice you have given someone?

Two things:

1. Be the change you want to see

2. Confidence leads to competence and competence feeds confidence

What else should Guyana know about Shonnet Moore?

"I consider myself to be a patriot. I am determined to assist in the development of Guyana. I believe in the rich potential of Guyana and Guyanese and I am positive that one day we will rise to become one of the world’s leaders."

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

"By then I would have already completed my degree in international relations and I would be a law student. I should be married by then, a little boy or girl you never know but one thing is sure, I will continue to assist in the empowerment of women."

Artiste You Oughta Know - Don Gialiani

In keeping with promoting local Guyanese Talents, GuyanaLime is proud to present the first feature of "Artiste You Oughta Know" this being no other than Don Gialiani. Born and raised in the capital city Georgetown, Guyana, Carlton Jevaun Washington referred to as "Don Gialiani" developed an early love for music listening to records and cassette tapes of music greats from his father's collection. According to Gialiani, the release of Jay Z' 'Reasonable Doubt' in '96 and Mase's 'Harlem World' album in '97 completely turned his attention and focus on hip-hop music. From there on, making beats on desk tops, freestyling and song writing was practically a regular day for him in the early years of high school. After high school, a few friends and him formed a group called 'Ragz to Richez' in around 2002, and thats when his recording career began. The group was short lived but nevertheless they did make a few hits, which included ( After Party & V.I.P ) . Gialiani then began his solo career working with popular producer, singer, song-writer 'Fojo' of 'Platinum Studio' and the song titled "Rude Boi" featuring Fojo was an instant hit. The music video premiered on every local television station simultaneouly and got great reviews in Entertainment newspapers, magazines and websites. The releases of dancehall crossover 'Get Down' featuring Typheon and Malo and rock crossover 'Escape' featuring Andrew soon followed and were both recorded at the 'Brutal Tracks Studio'. Don Gialiani is currently managed by Timeless Barbados Inc. who are the owners of the Barbados Music Awards.

Recently, Guyana Lime was fortunate to catch up with the hip-hop artiste in a very candid interview. Read the exclusive interview with Don Gialiani here.

What does "Don Gialiani" mean to you? And how did you come up with that name?

"On one hand Don Gialiani is just a name and a way of being completely different from everyone else because if you were to google me it would be all me and basically saying don't compare me to anybody and on the other the name is more than just a name it says: style, sophistication, intelligence, superiority in my field. "

What was it about Jay Z' 'Reasonable Doubt' in '96 and Mase's 'Harlem World' album in '97 that turned your attention to hip-hop music?

"The realness and rawness of 'Reasonable Doubt' has alot to do with me being a hip hop artiste. Mostly because of how vivid the picture of Jay Z upbringing was through his music and the struggle that alot of people can relate to. You felt as if he grew on your block or right around the corner because of how similar alot of things were."

Tell us about the group you formed in high school "Ragz to Richez"

"A bunch of friends with the same passion for music got together and started doing some low budget recordings and it was mostly for fun I guess at the time because we were all persuing other more important things but for some strange reason music didnt let me go ."

Why did you choose to enter the music industry?

"Besides the fact that I'm good at what I do, it gives me a chance to voice my opinion freely, tell my story of how I live and where I'm from, to be listened to, to inspire and motivate and have my country recognised internationally."

Where do you get your inspiration when writing the lyrics for your songs?

"Everywhere. Things that are going on around me, things happening around the world, dreams I have and mostly what is present and relevant."

How recognised would you say you are as a local artist?

"I'm one of the most known recognised local artistes but I would say that is basically with the younger generation and my music isn't just limited to that group in terms of message and content so a short term goal is to make an impact on the older generation and somehow find a way to link the two because we really aren't that different."

What is your main goal in life?

"To be a person that set a possitive example that inspires and motivates through music, give back to my country in everyway possible especially in overall development."

Reports say that you are currently being managed by Timeless Barbados Inc, the owners of the Barbados Music Awards, how did you get involved with them?

"I was referred to Timeless based on my reputation in hip-hop music here and performance background. I was invited to perform at their annual Hip Hop Festival in Barbados and I guess they were impressed so they asked to manage me."

What are you currently working on?

"I'm trying to get a factory done. High quality demo done by febuary in Barbados. I will be working with some of the best upcoming artistes there, all past BMA winners or nominees with some of the best producers on that side. Currently here I'm working on a new club track with Fojo that I'm very sure will be played all around the country when it's released. I'm also doing new music with Brutal Tracks Studio and an Atlanta based producer mostly for promo purposes."

What can we expect from "Don Gialiani" in the next 5 years?

"The level of international superstar but obviously not overnight and despite what alot of people assume, I actually want to take my time getting to the top. It is very important for me to learn all aspects of the music business especially producing and also study business in general because its unrealistic to expect a lifetime career in music, atleast on the fore-front."

What advice do you have for aspiring artists?

"I will be honest and not say just whats typically said but all seriousness...
learn your weaknesses and acknowledge them early... strenghten those... be an all-rounder it increases your selfconfidence, that way you believe in you. Be humble, focused, proud... keep the faith and big things will happen."

As we all know by now E!092 is a local entertainment update show hosted by the very hot Simone. How and why did you become involved with Hits and jams tv, and more so as a TV host?

"Hmm..Well to be honest I never actually considered becoming a tv host,but I knew the guys from HJTV before the television station even started and they asked me if I'd do the show.I decided to give it a try, and well hey..I became the host of E!092"

Why an entertainment show?

"I'm not the producer of the show..just the host..it wasn't my idea..even though it is a pretty good show and all :)..I was just asked to host it."

If you could interview anyone in the world who would you choose and why?

"Hmmm...I'm guessing you mean in the entertainment world so that would definitely be Rihanna..I am a biiggg fan of hers..When i heard her first hit i didn't even think she'd get this far..I love her, love her music..I think she'se phenominal so she would definitely be my pick."

I think you are naturally funny... even when you're talking about serious issues. Did you always see the humor in different situations?

"I guess so, I'm hardly ever serious, unless its ABSOLUTELY necessary, I'm always giggling or smiling...its just my personality."

As a TV Host, what has been your greatest experience to date?

"Well to be honest with you, I haven't really had any huge out of the ordinary experience..but becoming a face on tv has definitely been interesting..I've been faced with situations that have been somewhat ridiculous but at the end of the day I like what I do..and sometimes its nice when someone comes up to you on the street or something and say oo hi simone I like your show orr ur doing a good job...and I definitely like being a part of the concerts and getting to meet the artistes..but I can't really think of anything that was totally out of the ordinary for me."

Have you given any thought to having your own Talk Show?

No..I don't want to become a talk show host..and I don't even have plans of being a TV personality for the rest of my life..I have plans on studying medicine...My ultimate goal is to become a retinal specialist....soo no plans whatsoever of having a talk show :)

As Guyana's hottest TV Show host, how do you deal with negative criticism?

"You think I'm a hot host? gee..thanks :)...Well I definitely get tonnnsssss of negative criticism..but I don't really pay attention to it..its not something that i try to "deal" with or something that affects me..i hear it and I let it go immediately..it has absolutely no effect on me."

What are your views on local pageantry in Guyana? would you enter any if you had the opportunity?

"Nope..not interested in pageantry..I think the industry needs to be developed a bit more, our girls should be trained for a longer period of time so they can be a bit more prepared on the international scene..I'm definitely not a big fan of pageants though."

If you could change anything about yourself what would it be and why?

"I don't mean to sound conceited or anything, but there's nothing I would change about myself."

Is there a guy in your life?

"Yep! There's a guy in my life."

What three things must be on your christmas list this year?

"WOW! I have a veryy long christmas list but my top three things are an iPhone..definitely a must have.a car..and jewellery - I love jewellery."

What can we expect from you in the future?

"Hmm..I'll be doing medicine..sooo when you don't see me on tv anymore..you could probably come see me if you have any problems with your eyes :)..Wish me luck!"

Designer You Oughta Know - Michelle Cole Rose

In keeping with promoting local talents from Guyana, Guyana Lime is once again proud to feature another Top designer that has made a name for herself. The name Michelle Cole Rose over the years has become synonymous with the very exquisite genres of glamour and fashion, and has impacted greatly, especially in the local fashion arena.

A true representation of success, since the day, in her eleventh year, when she had gotten her first sewing machine, Michelle’s innovation grew; making uniforms for school friends by the age of twelve, then onwards to making a living from her creations by fifteen. Many years after, Michelle Cole still strikes the iron as hot as she had then, for now her clothes are carried in some of the best boutiques in the Caribbean and in the United States.

Michelle is a nature and fun-loving gal, this can be evident in her designs, with natural fibers, earth tones, stones, wooden beads, shells, paintings and raffia; for her goal as a fashion designer is to ‘Recreate nature through celebration, as nature itself is a celebration of life’. Indeed this is true for her clothes expresses nothing short of comfort, vibrancy and beauty.

Very recently Guyana Lime was fortunate to interview Michelle Cole. Read the exclusive interview below:

Describe Yourself: "I am dedicated, focused,motivated, and sometimes shy".

When and how did you get into fashion designing? "When I was five years old I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. I was always cutting up clothes to make into something else either for me or my doll and always getting into trouble for it , when I tured 11 years old my parents decided to support my talent and got me a sewing machine from that day on it was clothes and fashion, made clothes for my friends family , and as time went by every family menber would order an outfit and pay me for it. I got into the business of designing as a source of income, a hobby and as a way of expressing my creativity".

When did you realize that you had such great talent? "When I did a red gown for Mervina Sober in 1999 that was dubbed Red and ready. That gown got more press that any gown I have ever done, and is still rememebered today. I think thats when I said to myself "hey I have something special , a god given talent to share with the world and have been doing that since then".

What inspires your designs? "Nature , culture, I love things that tell stories about life".

Do you try to send out a message or theme in your clothes? "Yes I do, all of my collections tell a story , about culture or life. The story may be told by art or color or design , for eg. my TAJ collection was inspired by my visit to the tajmahal in India, after setting eyes on the beauty that was created as a tribute of love by the king that built it for his wife, I thought that to be a wonderful story hence the indian influence in that collection".

What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses in the art of fashion? "My attention to details, the fact that I can take a design from concept to the final product , I think as a designer you should be able to take your design design from that first inspiration the the sketch pad, to the fabic selection , patern cutting table ,sewing machine then to finally place on a model for that perfect fit".

What events has your line been showcased in? "Miami Fashion Week, Barbados Fashion Week, Caribbean Fashion Week , Absolut Caribbean Fashion,Carifesta nine and ten, Show Me Your Soul in St Kitts, MODDA New York,Genisis,FACTS,Miss Guyana Universe, Miss Guyana Teen,Miss Guyana World, Mash Queen, Miss Carival ,Miss Holetown,Miss Guyana African Heritage,Fashion has no borders: Canada, and many many more too many to mention".

How recognised are you as a local designer? "Well I think its an hounor as a local designer when u google Michelle Cole, the first thing that shows up is a picture myself followed by a whole host of other stories published by many different media houses , including She magazine, Pride, Sister Sister, Caribbean Impact,GEM, Shabeau, Chronicle, Guyana Times, GT vibes,Inefx,Stabroek, and many many more".

If you could do anything else, other than fashion, what would it be and why? "Other than fashion , it would be interior design, I love designing. I think if I am not creating in some way I will feel useless , so if not fashion it would be in some area of designing".

What can we expect from Michelle Cole in the next 5 years? "The walls have ears. I have lernt over the years to not reveal too much about what you have planned as sometimes not so talented people can use the information you let out against you, so for now I will keep my 5 year plans on the wrap, keep them guessing let them come up with their own creative ideas for a change, when I am ready to launch you will know what I have planned".

Miss World gets the hottest girls… again.

South Africa is all set to welcome the world’s most beautiful women. For the next five weeks, contestants competing in the Miss World pageant will be lighting Christmas trees, doing charity work and touring townships. Timeka ready to give it to you All Night

Fresh off being nominated for five awards for the Guyana Music Awards (GMA) otherwise known as the Accolades, Timeka Marshall is putting the final touches on her latest music video All Night. All Night, which was produced by current hit maker Stephen McGregor under the supervision of industry stalwart Jeremy Harding, basically chronicles a night's experience between a guy and a girl."It is really talking about the plans the girl has for the guy when he comes over," Timeka explains. Reminiscent of the Bartica Trade and Tourism Expos, “This is Bartica” is an event paying tribute to the town highlighting all aspects of life in Bartica, Region # 7 under the Chairman Mr. Holbert Knights and the Bartica Regatta Committee, has spearhead an ingenious programme of activities culminating in a three day event at the end of the month 28th -30th November.
Six major activities will comprise this phenomenal showcase – a grand opening, a creative exhibition focusing on mining and tourism, a massive party with Mingles Sound Machine, a special line up of tours to noteworthy tourism spots, a strategic information booth set up two weeks in advance and the climax of Designers’ Quest.
Designers’ Quest is a fascinating component of “This is Bartica”. The quest aroused an unprecedented interest in design talent. Seventeen (17) young persons, including two males between the ages 16 and 25 came forward to express what might have passed before as “hidden talent”. These individuals responded to a call to present illustrations and concepts within an overall theme which will showcase five elements of designer wear:
-beachwear
-swimwear
-cocktail wear
-work wear
-national costume
Now they see themselves as potential designers!!!
Having undergone workshops conducted by celebrated Bartica born regional designer, Sonia Noel and renowned Caribbean stylist and production designer, Richard Young, the seventeen designer debutantes, proudly asserting their talents, were confronted with a self reflective proposition – “Immerse yourself in your own personal history and come up with designs which are relevant representative and more so reveling in your culture”-
quipped Richard Young. Sonia Noel reinforced this need for appreciating self when she spoke of her own enterprising spirit and her belief in self as motivational factors in one’s choice of a meaningful career path.
After the interactive sessions, ten budding designers remain to present their collections at the month end extravaganza. Indeed, the interest in designing, per capita, is more than encouraging. It is extraordinary and more so inspiring. The presentation of these young designers will be the climax of “This is Bartica”. The winners will be given wonderful opportunities – The designer with the most marketable yet creative collection will be awarded a place in Guyana Fashion Weekend 2009 and the designer, most promising as a costumer, will be awarded the opportunity to design for Region 7, Mashramani 2009 presentation.
Indeed ‘THIS IS BARTICA” promises to be a spectacular, innovative experience on the national calendar of events.

So we all have family overseas eh? Whether they got there front track or back track it doesn't matter, becuase at the end of the year we know we gon get we nice barrel or box full with 99c chocolate, a few old clothes they grow outa, couple envelope with USD$20 fuh share between the pickney dem and well you know the rest. Well seeing that America is now going through some real tough times, I'm so sorry to let you know that you ain't getting no frigging barrel fuh this year and couple years to come. We can all name a few people we know personally that left Guyana dissing it up because they knew they were going to pursure the so called "American Dream". Ahhhh.. well don't let them fool you guys, they haven't found it yet and it doesn't seem like they will for a long long time. The funny thing is, despite the fact that the economy is so ficked up right now, ya family still insisting on you to come live there. Isn't that true? What ever happened to "visit"? No! family ain't want ya come visit no more they want you come and shy root in Queens. I guess Misery loves Company ! If ya think that is bad, then what do you think about those "over night Yankees"? Oh man, I certainly know a few. Dem was dead dead Guyanese to the bone up to CBJ Airport, and the minute dem plane land JFK, they turn Yankee. That's the reality of things folks. It really cracks me up to hear some of them speak with the " overnight accent" and then they accidentally pop in the guyanese accent. Thats the kodak moment for me. And what about those that suffering from amnesia eh? Yes you know what I'm talking about. The ones that can't believe Guyana got actual roads and not mud dam, the ones that can't believe Guyana got a Mall, working cellphones, Direct TV, Internet and even the ones that may ask if Cow does still eat grass a Guyana....Is it that they are ashamed, embarrassed and feeling regretful, knowing that they had a realively stable life here and now they juggling 3-4 jobs a week over deh? It's just something we'll never know. Another thing is, dem really want ya go live there rite, but take it from me, "Come see meh and come live with meh" are 2 completely different things. "Come see meh" which means come fuh the 3 week vacation the embassy grant ya and I'll carry you all over the place, places I never been to and spend my credit card ( my life) on you. BUT "Come live with meh" means, we'll catch up sometime man, afteral you here to live so no rush to see ya. I hope you get what I'm saying and certainly you can't deny it. It's the frigging truth so accept and bless. It wouldn't be fair to leave out the ones that actually come back to Guyana when someone close passes away, or someone close passes away or did I say someone close passes away?? Yes, that's basically the number 1 reason they come back here. Unless one a we dead then they will come and Oh man, you have got to see the way they act. Every frigging body must know they come back from America. The coolie gyals, who ketch lil colour now have blonde streaks and the latest clothes. As fuh the coolie boys, them pierce dem ears, head full of spikes and its a 50/50 chance they will be wearing braces on their kock out teeth. However, Aunty will wear thick thick makeup and Uncle will bring loads of cash to spend on dem boys up the road on RUM. The funeral is suddenly a big reunion with them being the center of attention. I'm not done yet, they will treat you like ya inferior and then start talking bout things in America so hard and how they regret leaving Guyana. Now dem a plan business marriage and all kind a thing fuh settle down with ease. How dese people really think the US stupidy. Well folks, I hope that I have made some sort of sense here and reminded you that you should Never cuss the bridge that ya cross cause ya might gah fuh cross it back....

Attention Seeking Guyanese

I must admit that I am one of the persons that use the social network facebook like so many others. Being one of the hottest meeting places on the internet, millions of people log on each day whether it is to send a message to a friend, leave a photo comment, play a game or like the few thousands of GUYANESE that unfortunately use this network sign in just to " show off pon dem friends and family what they doing every second of the damn day". Yes, you know what I'm talking about. On your profile you're given the choice to place a "status", it's entirely up to you what you wanna reveal to the rest of the world. So yeah, being curious of what some people have as their status, I decided to go view a couple profiles and see whats really going on. At first, it seemed like nothing because some folks just stated that they were ill, confused, hungry, tired etc. Nevertheless, some "attention seeking Guyanese" made it clear to brag about their so called perfect lives. I'm so glad I did what I did.... Now I know that some people got knocked up over the summer, some are planning on getting pregant, some are head over heals for some bhai and some are depressed since there relationship is no more. Some of these people change their status so often just to keep us up to date with their pathetic lives. Awwww..isn't that thoughtful. NOT !

I really don't care if you are tired, bored, depressed, hungry or feeling horny. You know yourselves. If you have nothing good to say then you should say nothing at all folks. Lastly, I would like to say that since Obama was elected, some of these dotish Guyanese haven't gotten over it as yet. Some still have their screen names as " Obama my hero" "Obama for mankind" " Obama will save us" and very recently while I was in downtown GT I heard some idiot say " Obama is GOD"... Ummm don't mean to burst your bubble folks but Obama doesnt give a shit about you, he probably doesnt even know you exist. He is under so much pressure to fix the crippled economy and if he doesn't do one hell of a job, he's gonna get bowled out ! So yeah, I urge you all to calm down your anxiety and stop blighting him. Stop counting the frigging eggs before they hatch. But then again, what else can you expect from "attention seeking Guyanese"?

Ok, so have you seen GT's latest commercials? Well if you haven't then you certainly should take a glance on some of the shit that's on these days. With exception to Nanda's Boutique, Lifestyles and Street Styles.. the rest of the ads are so lame and cheap. Yeah Yeah Yeah, so Christmas is in the air and we are all awaiting that string of Xmas ads with all those nice face gyals with them evening gowns posing up at Buddy's or in some rich man house. Well so far our friends at John Lewis seem to be using back their old Christmas ads once again. Guess times brown ! You will need to drop those prices Jonny boy. I must however commend the three boutiques I listed above for their standard and high quality ads they have produced. Keep up the good rep. While we are on the topic of GT television I must bring to your attention that I cyant stand that wanna be Matt Lauer on abby dese Guyana Today show ( once again Guyanese copy overseas show NBC Today). The dude picks corn wen he opens his mouth to speak even when he rass reading the headlines for the newspapers. Ahhh... for Christmas you'll need to ask Santa fuh the latest edition of Hook-On-Phonics. As fuh the coolie gyal co-hosting, I must say that she gets credit for trying but she should speak up a little more, and nah act like she frighten fuh talk. Speaking of improvements, I must also Big Up the girls on First Look News. Over the past months, they have been able to pull their acts together and somewhat improve that show. They speak relatively well and their show is well organised, despite for the fact that it still looks a bit cheap. You should seriously change the background of the studio. Throw some colour on it. We cannot forget to speak about the idiots that call into those breakfast shows in the morning. So dis morning Mr. Seegolyn on his Daybruck show was having a "children quizz" seeing that its Tourism month. He clearly seh he want lil pickey fuh call and answer the question yet some UG ass called in, followed by couple other dotish individuals. I also cyant understand why some people call into these shows to send out freaking Good Morning greetings to dem family. Why the rass they cyant pik up de damn phone and call them personally. But no, the entire Guyana must know that they wake up, mussy int brush dem teeth and sending good morning greetings. Is nothing these people int got to do. Oh lowdy, how can I fuhget about DJ Stress-me-out. He is once again promoting another event, this time however is NOT the usual " final party at Buddy's poolside before the official handing over" but rather some Boat party from Parika to Fort Island. Hopefully no drunk coolie falls off. Additionally, GRRC is once again having their "final" book sale...Aaaahhhh no comment.

Designer You Oughta Know: D’Nàtálie Smith

Guyana Lime is once again proud to feature another successful Guyanese fashion Designer. D’Nàtálie Smith is one of the most prosperous business women in Guyana having founded several thriving companies before taking up the mantle as a fashion designer. She ran an Etiquette consultancy firm and worked with local corporations and top city schools teaching etiquette. In 1998, she co-founded a Real Estate Brokerage company with her mother and to this day it’s a successful partnership which she is still very much at the helm.
D’Nàtálie expressed her natural talent for fashion at an early age when she designed her casual and evening pieces for a local pageant at the age of fourteen. At fifteen, with the help of a dress maker she wore her own party outfits and by the following year she was able to plan her entire summer wardrobe. At seventeen, D’Nàtálie designed and created her first apparel, a two piece skirt suit in black and pink polka and a dress in matching material. She certainly did not stop there. D’Nàtálie continued designing and making clothes for family members and herself, sometimes with the help of local dressmakers. In 2004, her formal entry into the world of fashion captured with judges’ nods for the best designed gown and best designer in the locally produced Talented Teen Pageant.
In August 2004, D’Nàtálie made a bigger name for herself with the launch of her bridal collection whose focal point was the gowns of colour, none of which were plain white. They ran a kaleidoscope of colours hence the name Kaleidoscope Bridals.
Smith has since worked with Miss Guyana Universe 2005, creating a spectacular gown for Nadia Shung, Umobile Telecommunications Network Marketing campaign “Talk like U Do” and Courts Guyana Incorporated Bridal Registry Brochures. Her designs have been featured in the Guyana Entertainment Magazine and all the local print media and televisions stations. Her vast knowledge of various cultures and lifestyles has influenced her designs and enabled her to keep ahead of trends. Her unique designs cater to women in general, a fact attested by the designer that by using different body types she creates the true representation of the very essence of womanhood.

In 2006, Kaleidoscope Fashions changed to D’XàBê representing the initials of her two sons, Xavier and Benicio. She describes this new line as "Bridal gowns of an Eastern influence but with a Western flavour,". More so, this line also includes jeans wear, tops, evening gowns and a series of footwear. Additionally, she has already designed the wedding gowns which include such intricacies as sequins, beaded work and hand-knitting. Smith has also contracted a fabric manufacturing firm in Pakistan which will actually be custom-making the fabric to suit her taste and specifications.
In a very candid interview with Guyana Lime, D’Nàtálie says her inspiration may come from anything at any given moment, a song, a play, history, a colour, or even fads. Her simple joy is found spending time with her sons. She describes herself as being arrogant, self centered and obsessive added with emotional, loyal and witty. “I am arrogant because I know I possess a keen intelligence and I am self centered because of my humanity. My world revolves around me and the people in my orbit because I love and truly care for them” says Smith.
She also conveyed that fashion designing was always been a childhood dream that she had to put aside for it seemed like a frivolous thing “something that does not entail too much intellect”, says Smith. Nevertheless, she had poise, spoke well and was intelligent, so she self taught a few things in order to be where she wanted to be. D’Nàtálie also revealed that if she could do anything else other than fashion, she would certainly have to enter the food business. “ I believe it's another way to exercise creativity, I cook very well and like to do it with panache” says Smith. When asked to comment on her philosophy of the art of fashion, D’Nàtálie added that “Fashion is a mirror of our times; it reflects our culture at any given point. Historically, clothing revealed many details about the lifestyles of people from various past cultures…As designers, knowledge of where fashion has come from helps us to understand how it is progressing in our own time and to anticipate where it may lead in the future and its certainty to evolve. Historical clothing can provide a wealth of inspiration and ideas which can be adapted to our modern lifestyle. However care should be given not to use them too literally in case they look like actual costumes rather than new trends inspired by the past.”
When questioned about her strengths and weaknesses as a local fashion designer, D’Nàtálie admitted that her main strength was her ability to be creative while her weakness was the lack of finances to move to the next level through marketing and mass production. With confidence and pride, D’Nàtálie sees herself owning a few franchise stores around the world in the next five years from now. “When you are dreaming you go all the way no limitations”, says Smith.

Caribbean Loses Alton Ellis and Byron Lee

During the last few weeks, Jamaica, the Caribbean and the world have lost two giants in music.
Alton Ellis, the "Godfather of Rocksteady", defined an era, when little was known about Jamaican music outside the ghettos of Trench Town. Ellis released over 35 albums and bridged the transition from Ska to Rocksteady to Reggae (Raygay); in a career that spanned 50+ years. He scored major hits with such memorable tracks as "Girl I've Got a Date", "Cry Tough" and "Get Ready - Rock Steady", which was the first song to refer to the name of the newer genre. His music has been reworked by King Yellowman, Biggie, Tupac, KRS1 and most recently Sean Paul who scored a major hit with the rework of Ellis' "I'm Still In Love With You" from his multi-platinum album "Dutty Rock". A true pioneer, Ellis toured regularly until his death in London in October 2008.Byron Lee will probably be remembered best, as the leader of the Dragonaires and their Calypso hits of the last 30 years, but he is also an important part of the machinery that shaped and developed Jamaican music to what it is today. Byron Lee started out playing Ska in the late 1950's and was credited with creating the 1st touring showcase of Jamaican talent, that took little known acts throughout North America and the Caribbean. He has been credited with bringing the music of "downtown" into the homes of "uptown" Jamaica. Lee eventually bought WIRL records from early music pioneer Edward Seaga, and formed Dynamic Sounds which, at the time, became the most well equipped recording studio in the Caribbean, recording such legends at The Rolling Stones and Paul Simon.After playing at Carnival regularly during the 1970sand 1980s, Byron Lee brought Trinidad carnival to Jamaica in 1990. With the support of Carnival artists Jamaica Carnival was a huge success bringing together "uptown" and "downtown" culture in one massive street party of 500,000 people. With Jamaica Carnival, Byron Lee effectively did for the Eastern Caribbean what he had done for Jamaica some years before - packaging and showcasing their culture on a large scale.

Come Sunday night Polar ice's Shawn Hinds and the Polar Beauties are headed to the venue to host their massive "Polar Ice Dancehall Fiesta" which will take the form of a steamy party that will feature popular dancehall and reggae hits. She performed alongside Eddy Grant at a memorable show in their hometown. Pamela was still attending school at that time and was already singing at parties and functions at the age of five. Since her father also ran a local sound system her knowledge and love for music was built on rock solid foundation, and her in-depth familiarity with the classics never failed to surprise the assorted bandleaders and galaxy of big name acts she would later sing within years to come.
After leaving school in 1976, she joined the army where she sang for visiting dignitaries such as Fidel Castro. She also represented Guyana at song festivals and from the age of 15 sand lead and backing vocals with Yoruba Singers and then Sid and the Slickers.
Pamela will be accompanied to Guyana by her Manager Ira Lewis who shares an amazing sense of optimism, anxiety and readiness. They are part of a larger overseas contingent of outstanding Guyanese musicians, young fresh talents, regional and international entertainment media are in the ready mode to fill the coveted slots for international participants.

Soca extraordinaire Rupee, is a big activist for HIV causes. Rupee knows all too well the effects that HIV has on families, because his parents died from AIDS. He stated that his father whom he loved very much contracted the virus by having sex outside the marriage. In turn, his father passed on the virus to his mother. Rupee describes that time in his life as an especially difficult one and also admits to periods of depression. The artist went on to say that with the love and support of close friends and family, he was able to get through it.

Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president of the United States. A crowd of 125,000 people jammed Grant Park in Chicago, where Obama addressed the nation for the first time as its president-elect at midnight ET.

“If there is anyone out there who doubts that America is a place where anything is possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,” Obama declared. “Young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states,” he said. “We have been and always will be the United States of America.
“It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America,” he said to a long roar.

The win by Obama, son of a black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas, marked a milestone in U.S. history. It came 45 years after the height of the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King. In a campaign dominated at the end by a flood of bad news on the economy, Obama's leadership and proposals on how to handle the crisis tipped the race in his favor. Exit polls showed six of every 10 voters listed the economy as the top issue.

Obama will be sworn in as the 44th U.S. president on January 20, 2009. He will face a crush of immediate challenges, from tackling an economic crisis to ending the war in Iraq and striking a compromise on overhauling the health care system.

These features were a result of a combination of strategic planning, innovative design and moreover a magnetic charming personality. The latter, one sees radiating from her maternal and more so compassionate spirit exuded generously when with her two daughters, Mariska and Shonta.

In 2007 she was a recipient of the Shabeau Magazine award for excellence for her contribution to fashion in the Caribbean. Imbued with a passionate drive for innovation and a nationalistic spirit for promoting her homeland, she utilized her recently garnered skills, contacts and access to launch Guyana Fashion Week 2007. This sense of enterprise she dedicated to invigorating and not so vibrant fashion sector. She saw tourism and fashion as a natural corollary and has assumed as her vocation the promotion of these sectors.

Strong willed and determined, this Leo pioneering C.E.O of G.F.W, who also went on to become the official fashion designer for Barbados Music Awards, has gone on to produce two reality television series in Guyana – Guyana Model Search and Designers Portfolio. As an acknowledgement of her efforts, the government of Guyana commissioned her to head the fashion component of Carifesta X. With the second annual Guyana fashion weekend just concluded, she is all gong-ho about her proposed talk show geared towards empowering her women compatriots, in particular and women folk throughout the region.

Always on the cutting edge she creates and contributes to projects which indulge her humanitarian side. She’s forever donating to a charity and in December 2007 at “Style Mission” she raised funds for single parent families to afford them a more spirited Christmas season.

Sonia recently particpated in the Virgin Islands Fashion Week where she displayed an upbeat collection inspired by the wild life in her homeland. She featured animal prints mixed with earth tones including rich blacks and crisp whites. Ms. Noel also unveiled bustier and halter tops worn with hot shorts or Bermuda shorts, fluid skirts and several daytime dresses. Her oversized accessories; handbags, purses and luggage were traffic stoppers. For men, Ms. Noel brought out the animal instinct in them, sending them out in some super hot boy shorts, airy linen shorts and trousers, shown sometimes with loose caftan style shirts.

Recently, Guyana Lime caught up with Sonia Noel to get to know a little bit more about this successful savvy businesswoman. Read the exlcusive interview with Sonia.

Describe yourself

I am a single mother of two who is down to earth, caring, and sophisticated person who loves God, love life and loves people that love life.

When and how did you get into fashion designing?

I started about ten years ago. Fashion runs in the blood stream and I have always been intrigued in anything that’s creative in enhancing people’s appearance. I designed my first outfit at 11 for a junior pageant and continued to do so my friends and family. Right through my school year I’ve been involved in fashion show as and eventually I owned my own shop and people would always come to the shop complement me on my attire and lamenting about me not having it in the shop, they were my designs, so then I decided to start my own clothing line called Mariska’s Design after my elder daughter.

When did you realize that you had such great talent?

A long time ago because I was well coordinated and always gave good advice to my friends when it came to fashion.

What inspires your designs?

My inspiration varies. Lots of my collections in the past were influenced by the flora, fauna and water waves of my beautiful country Guyana. Sometimes you get inspirations at very strange time for example sitting at the airport, travelling on a boat to Bartica or even reading a book.

What is your design philosophy?

Fashion has more impact in our lives than we realize. You often hear people say ‘I am not a fashion conscious person’ but from the time you wake up in the morning we make a fashion decision from the tie we ware to the footwear we put on. It’s a fashion decision. Fashion is also a very powerful medium to send powerful message, for example, the Saturday night opening of GFW, which was sponsored by Ministry of Human Services, depicted the negative effects of domestic violence was very effective. When you look around you can see many companies and organizations that are using fashion to get their massages over.

Do you try to send out a message or theme in your clothes?

Sometimes, most recently, part of my GFW collection was enhanced by the use of condoms. The Guyana flag was made out of condoms on a black dress. That was my favorite.

What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses in the art of fashion?

I think my strength is that I’m very aggressive and because of that I create opportunities for myself and others in my industry. I believe in myself and in my work and I’m very confident that my work could go to the next level. On the other hand I could be very soft hearted and some people can mistake it for being weak.

What can we expect from Sonia Noel in the next 5 years?

In the next five years Sonia Noel should be a household name in the Caribbean while taking Guyana fashion industry to the next level. I will also be getting into interior designing

If you could do anything else, other than fashion, what would it be and why?

I really cannot imagine myself doing anything other than designing for it runs through my veins. However, if I had to do anything else I could see myself owning a chain of restaurants around the region because I love cooking and fine dining.

Diwali struck from pageant name

Faced with mounting pressure by Hindu groups, the National Diwali Committee has renamed its Diwali pageant.The Miss Diwali Pageant has been renamed the Miss Guyana Sari Pageant. The name change was announced at a public sashing of the contestants on Monday evening. For weeks since the pageant was announced, there had been calls by Hindu organisations and some private citizens for it to be renamed because of the fear that it would defile the festival.
Guyana National Diwali Committee Chairman Pradeep Samtani told Stabroek News yesterday that the committee met on the issue after it was approached by a group. “We want everybody to be happy,” he declared. Samtani, who had no problem with a name change, said he runs the committee democratically and hence the need for a committee decision. He had said last Thursday that it was too late to do anything, since the pageant was scheduled for October 25.
Samtani did not name the group that approached the committee but last week around a dozen Hindu organisations issued a public call for the pageant to be renamed and rescheduled and called for sponsors to pull their support for the event. In a statement, the groups said they were dissatisfied with the decision to go ahead with the pageant during the sacred and auspicious period, when Hindus are engaged in the worship of Mahalakshmi. It noted that for Hindus everywhere, Diwali is about the propitiation of Mother Lakshmi, who grants the devotees sustenance, fullness and enlightenment. “Consequently, we are of the firm conviction that ‘Miss Diwali Pageant 2008’ violates the sacredness and spirituality of one of the most revered Hindu festivals and constitutes a blatant exploitation of Hinduism,” they said.

Many online outlets are reporting that Lindsay Lohan has "confirmed" a lesbian relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson.
Lohan and Ronson rarely have been seen apart for several months, and they too have dodged direct questions about the nature of their relationship.

Love is a tricky emotion. There are some things that feel like love but they are much too superficial to be the real thing. Real love takes time and doesn't happen over night. Here are three things that people often confuse for love.

Lust

Lust is the feeling that is often mistaken for love at first sight. Lust is an intense and sudden attraction to somebody you hardly know. It is mistaken for love because the attraction is so strong.
Lust can feel like love because the feelings of attraction are strong and all-consuming. The emotions stirred up by lust can feel very real but they are based on a fantasy. To love somebody you must know them well but many people fall in lust while they are still strangers. What people in lust fall for is a fantasy of what might be and reality can get lost in the excitement.
Overwhelmed by physical attraction people in lust can't keep their hands off of each other. They think about each other constantly and talk about one another all the time. Lust is a happy feeling brought on by passionate attraction. If you are inexperienced in matters of the heart it is very easy to mistake all that passion for love.
Lust differs from love like night differs from day. Lust happens in the early phase of a relationship when people don’t yet know each other. Lust is based on a fantasy, and the fantasy and reality don’t always mesh up. This is where lust runs out of steam.
Although physical attraction is definitely a key ingredient in any romantic relationship, love is more than just a physical longing. If a relationship is all about physical attraction it is based on lust. Really loving another person takes time and it can't be based on physical attraction alone.

Obsession

Obsessions are often mistaken for love because people rationalize the crazy feelings they are having. They assume that it must be love if the other person is always on their mind. Obsession is similar to lust but it is much more misleading and destructive. While lust is often fleeting, fading as two people come to know each other better, obsession sticks around.
The more time and effort invested in an unhealthy obsession the more intense the obsession can become. People in an obsessed state have a one track mind where the other person is concerned and they often lose touch with who they are as an individual. This loss of individuality creates a vicious circle of behavior where the obsessed person grows more and more dependant on the other person to bolster their sense of self.
Even unrequited love, love that is not returned, can become an overwhelming obsession. When one person believes they are in a relationship that doesn't really exist, or when one person is more invested in an existing relationship than the other, the foundation for an obsession has been laid.
Real love is nurturing and helps people grow but obsession is debilitating. If you feel like you have lost yourself, if you are always striving to please your partner without them doing the same for you, and if you find yourself making all decisions in your life based on the feelings and needs of the other person you could be dealing with obsession.

Rebounding

A rebound is a relationship that starts up very quickly after another relationship has ended. Rebounds are rarely based on love but are really a way of alleviating the loneliness people feel when a relationship ends.
Rebounding can feel like love for the simple reason that the people involved want to be in love. They are used to the security of being in love and more than anything else they want to feel that security again. They convince themselves that they are in love when they are actually missing the safety and comfort of the relationship they left behind.
If an old relationship keeps interfering with the progress of a new relationship it could mean that the relationship is a rebound. When somebody is on the rebound they are not entirely over their previous relationship. They may still be trying to work out unresolved issues from that relationship. Rebound relationships may feel like love but they are still impacted by unsettled feelings from the past.

Exclusive Interview With Miss Guyana World 2008

Christa Simmons, a model and University student from Georgetown, was crowned Miss Guyana World 2008 in Guyana's capital city. She will represent Guyana at the Miss World 2008 Pageant scheduled for 13th December in Johannesburg, South Africa. "Guyana Lime" recently caught up with Christa to get to know a little bit more about Guyana's ambassador. Can she capture the Miss World Crown for her country? Read the exclusive interview with Ms. Christa Simmons.

Describe yourself in one or two sentences.
I am an open spirited individual who can connect with anyone almost instantly. I represent a true Guyanese woman in the sense that I am strong, dedicated, hospitable and beautiful in body, mind and spirit.

What quality do you like most about yourself and why?
Everyone has special talents they have been blessed with and I am proud of my ability to always be charismatic with persons I interact with.

What is the one feature you'd change about yourself and why?
There is absolutely nothing I would prefer to change about myself; no feature. I love me just the way I am, this is who I was supposed to be and what I am supposed to look like. I am my image. God has blessed me with it and I am thankful.

What has been the most significant accomplishment in your life? Why?
I would have to refer to my being able to graduate from the University of Guyana in 2006 after pursuing a degree in Sociology where I was one among a few who passed with credit. That was quite an accomplishment at the age of 21!

What would you say is the biggest problem facing our educational system today? Why?
The rate at which the more mature, qualified and experienced teachers and lecturers are leaving our shores, in search for betterment; leaving behind a system now dependent on younger brains to mould our young ones. It is indeed a major sorepoint in our educational system today.

What bothers you most about what is happening in your country today?
The rate at which prices are skyrocketing while persons salaries remain at one level, putting tremendous pressure on breadwinners country-wide.

What are the best qualities a parent could share with their children? Why?
Every parent wishes the very best for their offspring. The best qualities a parent could share with their children are in the likes of them being responsible, keeping their religious beliefs, being well mannered, caring for others, showing respect so as to earn it and the most important is to love others as themselves. In doing this, a parent could rest assure that they would nurture an individual in whom they can be sure to be proud of in their later years.

What is the best advice your parents have given to you? Why?
I grew up with my mother who always provided the very best for me during every stage of my life and the best advice she has given to me is to be the best that I can be in every venture. I see that as the best advice because it always propels me to excellence.

Tell me something that will make me remember you.
There are various ways a person can remember me, but I will give you a very funny way to remember me. Here goes, I have always enjoyed fishing but I am afraid of fishes just out the water; I love swimming but I cannot swim!!

If you could be famous, in what way would you choose?
In the same way Presidents are famous persons, singers and musicians are. So, I would seek fame through the music industry, reason being is that music is food for the soul and through music messages could be sent. So, I would use music to minister to the hearts of persons in rehab, children in foster homes, and the elderly homes, giving them all hope and sending caring messages to them through music while healing their broken spirit.

What can women learn from men?
A woman can learn to be as resilient as a man is. Women are known for their strength yes, but a man is known for showing his and being strong in every situation. I think that if a woman can learn that art from a man we (women) would be better off in the sense of standing our ground and not having to waver.

What is the one thing that symbolizes happiness for you?
Not looking at the definition here but the one thing that symbolizes happiness for me is seeing a satisfied smile. That is one feature you can see and be sure that someone is happy.

If you were given any special power, what would it be?
A flood is a natural disaster but after the flood the water remains on the land so long, stirring up various illnesses and taking lives, so if I could have the power to dry up the land after a flood I would feel like superwoman.

What is your definition of success?
Setting my eyes on a task I wish to accomplish, starting it and being able to complete it regardless of the time I take to do so defines success for me.

Tell us about your “Beauty With a Purpose” Project.
Over the years I have taken it upon myself to lend a helping hand to children in need and comforting the elderly. I have done some personal work and with a few clubs. I am planning on getting more involved with charitable organizations and more so for the Miss Worlds’ “Beauty with a Purpose” Project, I plan on working with a few childrens home around the city.

What has been your most memorable rainy day?
My most memorable rainy day by far, stems back to my childhood. It was one of those wet weeks when the rains didn’t want to stop. So one morning, my sister and I decided to put on our swimwear and shower cap to bathe in the rain in our yard. We were having so much fun that we decided to walk around the village much to the amusement of passerby’s. We ended up at a cousin and persuaded her to come join us, which she did and we ended up going back to our front yard. After having enough, our cousins decided to head home and it was just then that the rains decided to end! They had to run through the streets in their swimwear while everyone was laughing at them. It is still embedded in my mind to this day.

If you were invited to participate in the next NY Fashion Week, which fashion designer you would like to dress you?
It would be a honor to be chosen to walk the runway of the NY fashion week! There I would love to showcase pieces from our very own local and talented NY based Guyanese designer Roger Gary’s designs. I would also be privileged to be clad in pieces from the trendy Ralph Lauren.

Tell us about the nightlife in your hometown.
In Guyana the sun sets on various persons clad in their working attire at either a beer garden or one of our many fish shops after a full day’s work. When night falls, you could have your pick of various clubs, bars, fish shops, street limes with dancing competitions every night or have a more relaxing evening at one of our many luxurious or Creole restaurants, a poolside hang out, comedy night lime or the famous Sunday night lime on the East Coast seawall. You may just be seeing the same set of people at a few places around town but the encounters are always friendly.

What has been your weirdest dream? Describe it.
I have had a few crazy dreams, as I would put it, but of them all I could remember dreaming that our home was being robbed and I was the only one awake and seeing what was happening and the bandits were seeing me too. What was even crazier was that I was trying to scream and no sound was coming out while our home was being destroyed but these burglars. I got so frustrated that I started crying until I woke up and I got up looking around me frantically for the bandits, luckily they weren’t there but I was still crying.

What message you would like to send to the other Miss World contestants?
Hi girls!!!! and Congratulations!!!! I am anxiously awaiting the Genesis of our friendship. I have been reading everything about you all and I can’t wait to see you all in person. I know that we will literally “rock” Joberg. I can’t wait to see you there. Christa S.

Call it a love diffusion.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie's marriage is on the fritz, with the 50-year-old Queen of Pop and 40-year-old film director announcing their plans to divorce.
"Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after 7½ years of marriage," their reps said in a joint statement. "They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time. A final settlement has not been agreed upon yet."
"It is sad," Madonna publicist Liz Rosenberg told E! News.
Word of serious trouble in the Material World bubbled over in August amid reports that she had a dalliance with Alex Rodriguez, helping to wreck his marriage. Ritchie refuted the claims at the 50th birthday party he threw for her, while Rosenberg insisted their marriage "does not need saving."
The two were last spotted together in public in September, when she rang in Guy's 40th birthday in London and attended the premiere of his latest flick, RocknRolla.
Earlier Tuesday, news of the impending split was splashed across British tabs.
The Sun reported the fighting has become incessant. The Daily Mirror said Ritchie took time out from filming his latest movie, Sherlock Holmes, in France to head back to Great Britain to inform his parents that he and Madonna were planning to dissolve their union.
Per U.K. reports, Madonna has enlisted the services of celebrity divorce lawyer Fiona "Steel Magnolia" Shackleton, who supervised Paul McCartney's split from Heather Mills.
Ritchie could make out quite nicely from their breakup, pocketing as much as $100 million of the popster's estimated $500 million-plus fortune since the twosome did not have a prenuptial agreement.
Madonna and Ritchie tied the knot in an extravagant wedding in Scotland in December 2000. They have two children together, 8-year-old Rocco and 3-year-old David, whom they adopted two years ago in Malawi.
Madonna also has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship with dancer and former fitness trainer Carlos Leon.
This will be her second union to end in divorce; she and Sean Penn called it quits in 1989 after four years of rockiness.

It's no secret: Kids are having sex younger and younger, and they're not just doing it in the backseat of dad's car. They're doing it in school. In fact, more and more teens are going behind the school stage, under the bleachers and into abandoned classrooms to do more than hold hands. Here are some tips from Dr. Gary from the Tyra Banks show on how to better understand teen sexuality.

1. Acknowledge your adolescent or teenage child is becoming a sexual being -- just like you did.

2. Realize children are becoming sexualized earlier and earlier. With the advent of the Internet, we are raising the first generation of children who are just one mouse click away from x-rated websites and other adult material. Combine that with a media that saturates kids with lots of sex and sexual imagery, and you've got a recipe for kids who are sexualized by the time they're 9 or 10 years old.

3. Raging hormones are VERY hard to combat. Give your children an outlet to burn off the overwhelming feelings stirring inside of them. Sign them up for activities like dance class or sports to help them redirect their energy.

4. Have open, honest and nonjudgmental conversations with your child about sex. Sometimes parents have selective memories about their own "growing up" experiences and sexual experimentation. So let children know that you've had the same feelings they're feeling, and it's okay.

5. And if your child does have sex? Hold them closer to you. Talk to them with forgiveness and without judgment.

Prove It

Setting yourself up with a bargaining chip is key. If you're looking for a later curfew, start by coming home on time for your current one. Just think of the power! "Mom, I always come home on time. I just want this one late night."

Know Your Target

Avoid angry parents like the plague. If your brother has crashed another car, it's not the time to ask for a couple of bucks for the movies. If you approach a much calmer dad, you'll have a better chance of scoring a ticket to "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist."

Do Your Homework

Treat your parental request like an ultra-difficult school project: Do some research first. It looks a lot better -- and more responsible -- if you present your parents with all the info they'll need up front. Asking to go on a weekend trip? Give them info about the hotel you'd be staying in and write up an itinerary, complete with emergency phone numbers (like those of your trip buddies). They'll know you considered them when making your plans and they'll trust your judgment much more.

The word "threaten" should not enter into your parental plan -- ever. Don't swear you'll never speak to them again if they don't give you a ride to the mall. Miss Diwali Pageant sparks controversy

When organizers announced the revival of the Miss Diwali Pageant, they were hoping for at minimum a spark of public interest in what is undoubtedly one of the lower-profile contests on a shrinking circuit. What they got was a firestorm of controversy, centred on the tastefulness of venerating what one critic called the divine feminine (think: young, attractive and unmarried) against the backdrop of the sanctity of the worship of Lakshmi (think: Hindu goddess of prosperity) associated with the festival.
As a result, the pageant has been positioned uncomfortably between celebration, cheered on by a small but vocal group of supporters, and exploitation, with groups including the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, the Berbice Hindu Society and private citizens calling for it to be scrapped, or at least renamed. It is certainly the last place Guyana National Diwali Committee Chairman Pradeep Samtani expected it to end up. “I wasn’t aware of any controversy,” he said in an interview, adding that the decision to resuscitate the pageant was in response to public demand. Samtani, who agreed to chair the committee at no cost after he was approached to oversee the pageant, also reminded that he had successfully staged it some time in the 80s or 90s — he could not remember when — without attracting any of the criticism that it has recently generated. The other members of the committee planning the October 25 pageant are Marcelle Veeren-Shewjattan, Ravindra Prashad and Varsha Sharma.
Samtani did not betray any overt sensitivity to the criticisms, though he made it a point of repeating that he respects every religion and every race. “We don’t want to offend anybody,” he added. He was disappointed that none of the pageant’s critics approached the committee for a dialogue about their concerns. Apart from the statements and letters in the newspapers, no one has approached the committee. While it would require a committee decision, Samtani said he has no difficulty with renaming the pageant. At the same time, he challenged anyone to show how the pageant could desecrate the sanctity of Diwali, particularly since it is being staged in the festival’s spirit of celebration. “I wish someone could explain to me, how it is bad for Hinduism,” he said, explaining that the pageant is essentially about sari display rather than any depictions of the goddess. In this vein, he also stated that the pageant would not have talent segments or bikini displays and also noted that it is open to anyone, regardless of religious background.
Bristling at the suggestion that pageants by their very nature perpetuate the objectification and exploitation of women, Samtani pointed out that how the woman is viewed is ultimately an individual choice: “It is your mind. If you have evil thoughts you will project it, on the stage or on the road.” Similarly, he added that there are people who will look at the woman and respect her for who she is. He said that pageants continue to grow, pointing out that there are even beauty contests in the Muslim world. In addition to this, he said, women continue to break through traditional barriers and have become leaders in all fields including business and politics all across the world. In this context, he questioned whether the people who have been criticizing pageants are simply out to put limits on women.
The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has strongly opposed this most recent attempt to stage the pageant. It says the festival is of deep spiritual significance and for more than 30 years, it has been promoting the observance of the festival in its pristine form. It reminds that the Hindu community has continually condemned the hosting of Miss Diwali pageants and has, in the past, succeeded in getting them withdrawn. “This new attempt to reintroduce the pageant shows contempt for the feeling and conviction of the Hindu religion and community,” it says.
Meanwhile, social activist Vidyaratha Kissoon has been one of the more outspoken critics of the pageant. He admits that the pageant has been staged by prominent Hindu organizations and that the winners have gone on to other successful platforms, but he also points to sexism inherent in such pageantry. “We recognize that it is sexism which drives gender-based violence,” he says. “The pageants have not reduced sexism in our society, despite their claims to promote respect and equality of womanhood.” He adds that as the pageant has currently been promoted — a newspaper ad asks for a face portrait and full body length photographs — it perpetuates exclusion of those who are not considered ‘fit’ enough to participate in much the same way as other pageants. “…That exclusion is entirely opposite of the Diwali festival and Hindu principles which are open to all who recognize the search for truth evident in the prayer ‘Asato Ma sat Gamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya (Lead us from unreal to real, lead us from darkness to light).”
Samtani said he was not involved in the advertisements for entrants but he said there must be some criteria to ensure that the best people participate. On the latter point, he said it was possible for the pageant to be used to groom contestants for international pageants. If he seemed in any way aloof about the concerns of his critics, it is because he is thinking about the pageant in larger terms, envisaging it as part of a Diwali calendar of events that might be marketable to tourists, including overseas-based Guyanese. Rihanna has only $20,000 to her name- according to her ex-business manager.
According to blackarazzi.com the singer fired Patricia Williams and accused her of stealing her money when she realised the poor state of her finances.
Williams said: "It’s not my fault that she only has $20,000 to her name… I have worked for many high profile actors, musicians and multi-million dollar corporations. Why would I steal from Rihanna?”
The business manager explained: “I showed her all the paperwork and tried to explain to her the circumstances but she wouldn’t listen. She called me all sorts of horrible names and stormed off.”
Rihanna’s single Umbrella was number one on both sides of the Atlantic while her recent album Good Girl Gone Bad has sold around 5 million copies worldwide.
She has also performed stadium tours across the US and Europe and signed lucrative sponsorship deals.
So it’s a surprise that the Barbados born singer is skint. Williams has accused her label Def Jam of not funding Rihanna properly.
She said: “Def Jam doesn’t fund Rihanna properly, so Marc uses the money Rihanna makes from third-party endorsements and from tours to fund her album and music videos.”

Who knew that bringing sexy back, or at least the feel of it, would involve chains, rubber and mirrors? Or that it could also mean revival on a catwalk that was initially lacking the bold, creative feel of the first fashion weekend?
To get a sense, think prison manacles and pair them with leather shorts on male models so exposed that the focus of Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) 2 briefly shifted from scrutinizing the designs to male gazing or rather, a little bit of fun that had been missing up until Sunday night.
Credit Derek Moore for shaking things up with an eccentric yet playful bikini line. But it was not all him. Sonia Noel had a few things up her sleeve, bringing a kind of jungle fever to the runway with sexy animal prints paired with chic casuals and as always, she accessorized a step above the rest.
Though it came at the end of her ready-to-wear collection (and alongside Guyana’s best resident model, Melessa Payne), Noel threw in a tiger-print suitcase on wheels adding a different, eye-catching touch to the casual skirt flowing on Payne’s long legs and the mid-riff top revealing just how enviably fit she is.
As Noel’s outfits hit the catwalk on model after model, there was a clear sense of what being sexy and comfortable in the clothes on your back is about — turning a few heads yet keeping it somewhat simple. It did not have to be said, Noel’s line made it clear — you don’t have to bare it to come over as appealing. Though if you are wearing any kind of animal print enough is already stated.
The concepts on Sunday night were different and so were the designers and it appeared planned that the image of the final night would be somewhere between hot, sassy and unique. It was the most interesting night by a mile as the audience got a taste of the veterans and those seeking their breakthrough.
If anyone had a breakout night it was Marcia DeSantos, who shot out of nowhere with a stunning collection of linens. She called it, ‘Contour’ but it could just as easily have been named ‘Eye-candy’, connoting how beautiful it was so and just easy on the eyes.
Her colours were mostly pastels and the pieces ranged from the classy evening gown that is likely to look good on any woman no matter her frame to the more hip knee-length cocktail dresses. There were so many good pieces in the collection it was hard to pick one that stood out though a sexy, body-hugging dress that showed a playful side with its layers of flounces drew much approval.
There were hardly any where-would-I-wear-that moments and it came as no surprise when she was later named as the most promising designer of GFW by Shabeau Magazine, which had been scanning the three-day event for such a person.
The collection that would close GFW 2 was expected to be dazzling; it was that and much more. Olympia Small-Sonaram has done some strange things on the catwalk before and some even stranger things at the GFW, pulling off a lingerie line so steamy there were reports of the air-conditioning actually shutting down while her pieces were on stage last year at Buddy’s International Hotel. But she is good, and is known for some of the most daring collections unveiled on any local stage.
She closed the show on Sunday, but this time it was a tamer line and she chose to go pure; well not exactly. It was an all-white collection dubbed, ‘Mirrors and Reflections’, that testified to how much she has evolved since the last fashion weekend. She went for an edgier, groovier look and noticeably, more cloth.It could not get any groovier than the disco outfits, afro-wigs and designs covered in tiny pieces of mirror. She even threw in the accompanying music and a huge disco ball. The line was still trademark Small-Sonaram though with the skimpy bodysuits, plunging necklines and micro-mini dresses and skirts.
Of the few other lines deserving mention, new designer, Keisha Edwards’s ‘Infusion’ line certainly brought attitude to the stage. There were only about two pieces in the entire collection that looked ready-to-wear, but it was fun. Edwards had some of the female models parading down the catwalk looking like dominatrix before, during and after services.
Chandini Ramnarain and the ‘Aspara’ collection also created a buzz but some of the pieces were criticized for looking too much like less-interesting versions of the originals.
As for the foreign imports, it was expected that they would deliver and they did. The 2009 US men’s collection merged trendy new clothing from designers such as Perry Ellis, Hilfiger and Sean John. So what is new for next year? Classic, blue denim jeans that never go out of style, jerseys, suspenders and stylish blazers; there are also suave tailored three-piece suits.
Trinidad-based US designer Donna Dove’s ‘Tale of the Shirt’ collection was just stunning. It featured a string of mostly black and white shirts with intricate hand designs that actually look woven into the fabric. Dove was at GFW last year and judging from her collection on Sunday, she keeps getting better.

Miley Cyrus shuts down Disneyland to celebrate her Sweet 16 -- even though her birthday isn't until Nov. 23. The supersized soiree included a four-song performance by the teen queen and a fireworks display above Sleeping Beauty Castle and 16 giant inflatable candles.

"Miley is really hard to surprise," her father Billy Ray Cyrus said at the event.
Organizers estimated over 5,000 people attended the special party, which cost $250 a ticket. On the event's purple carpet - that's Cyrus' favorite color - the "Hannah Montana" star bragged that her parents bought her a new puppy for her birthday. What else does Cyrus want for her birthday? A new car? Perhaps a later curfew?
"My parents shut down Disneyland for me, so I'm good for a while," Cyrus said.
Cyrus' father opened up for his daughter with a few of his own songs, including "Achy Breaky Heart." His daughter donned a white ruffled skirt and jersey-like vest with "Sweet 16" printed on the back for her truncated concert. At one point, Cyrus boarded a boat in the park's Rivers of America and crooned such tunes as "Breakout" and "G.N.O."
Throughout the evening, several popular attractions, such as Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean, remained open to partygoers. Additional activities, like receiving a "Hannah Montana" makeover and playing the upcoming Disney Interactive Studios rhythm video game "Ultimate Band," were also made available to attendees.
Partygoers ogled celebrities roaming around the park throughout the party. David Archuleta and his entourage skipped the line to ride Space Mountain. Jennie Garth and her family ducked out before the fireworks display capping the celebration. Other stars in attendance included Steve Carell, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Disney used the event to promote their upcoming "What Will You Celebrate?" marketing initiative, which encourages tourists to take "celebration vacations" with their families. Beginning in 2009, guests at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida can gain free theme park admission on their birthday with a valid ID and proof of birth date.
Over at Disney's California Adventure, Disneyland's sister theme park, an entirely different celebration was occurring during the Sweet 16 event: the 11th annual Gay Days Anaheim, an unofficial gathering of gays and lesbians at the Disneyland Resort. Event producer Jeffrey Epstein said Cyrus' affair didn't conflict with Gay Days Anaheim.
"We're happy to share our big weekend with Miley," said Epstein. "While it may be a small world after all, we think it's big enough for both groups to have a blast."

Abhishek Bachchan, who is all geared up for the release of "Drona" this week, says he doesn't mind being overshadowed by his wife Aishwarya Rai.
At this year's Cannes Film Festival attended by him and his wife, Abhishek was repeatedly asked how it felt to be overshadowed by his wife.
"Although the intention behind such questions is obviously not honourable, I don't get rattled at all. It's a pleasure to be overshadowed by the most beautiful woman in the world. I had a ball doing the 'Unforgettable' concerts with Aishwarya," Abhishek told IANS.
After "Guru", the actor is teaming up with his wife once again for Mani Ratnam's next film.
"I know I'll have a great time shooting Mani Ratnam's film with her. Right now I'm looking forward to her return from Brazil," he said.
Aishwayra was in Brazil shooting for Shankar's "Robot". Abhishek said he was looking forward to Aishwarya's presence at the premiere of "Drona".

"It sounds very romantic to say my wife is flying down especially to be at my film's premiere. But sadly, it is not true. Her schedule for Shankar's 'Robot' was supposed to wrap up a week before the premiere, and it did. So she was going to be in Mumbai for the 'Drona' premiere anyway.
"Having said this, let me add, she'd have come back to Mumbai for the occasion from any part of the world even if she was shooting."
Aishwarya was recently in Paris to shoot the latest L'Oreal ad. Both her in-laws, Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan, were also there, but they couldn't meet her.
"Yes they were there. Unfortunately ma and pa left a day before Aishwarya arrived in Paris. Pa had to be back to shoot a television programme to promote the 'Unforgettable' concerts in India."
"Yes, the 'Unforgettable' concerts are now going to be staged in India, beginning with Mumbai.
"We're in the process of working out the venues and dates. There'll be more time for all this once 'Drona' is released,"said Abhishek.

Miss World 2008 to be hosted by South Africa

The official announcement of Johannesburg as the host city for the 58th Miss World contest took place on September 9th.

Some 115 of the world’s most beautiful women are set to strut their stuff at the Sandton Convention Centre this December as they compete to be crowned Miss World.
ONE hundred and fifteen of the world’s most beautiful women will descend on South African shores in November, to prepare for the Miss World 2008 pageant taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre in December. The event was initially scheduled to take place in Kiev, Ukraine, but was moved to South Africa over fears of political instability in Ukraine’s neighbouring South Ossetia and Russia. This will not be the first time that South Africa has hosted the event. In 1992, 1995 and in 2001, South Africa hosted the event at the Sun City entertainment and casino resort in the northwest province. This announcement was made by the chief executive of the Johannesburg Tourism Company’s (JTC) Lindiwe Mahlangu at a press conference held on 9 September. Mahlangu voiced her excitement to have the event brought to Johannesburg, saying it “will now give us a chance to tell the Jozi story.” Mahlangu added that it was part of the JTC’s mandate to attract major world events to the city in order to increase tourism and trade, but also to draw awareness of the international community to Johannesburg’s ability to host events of varying magnitudes. “Broadcast to over 2-billion television viewers in over 200 countries, it effectively reinforces our capability to handle other mega-events such as the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ and so increase the allure of the city to potential visitors,” said Mahlangu.
The JTC went neck-on- neck with countries including China, who hosted the event last year and England for the opportunity to have the 2008 chapter of the Miss World pageant, but it was South Africa’s bid that impressed Julia Morley, the co-founder of Miss World along with her late Husband Eric Morley. She is also the current chairperson of Miss World Limited. The contestants will arrive a month before the event takes place on 13 December to take part in the Miss World Festival, which will see the contestants visiting different parts of the country. A number of high profile events including the Miss World Charity Auction, The Miss World Charity Dinner and the Miss World Children’s party will also take place during that month. Speaking about the event, Julia Morley, could hardly contain her excitement at bringing the event back to Africa. “South Africa has great meaning to me. We have worked with a South African television crew that films all our Miss World pageants and they continue to do a fantastic job.” Morley spoke of the pageant’s desire to showcase the country to the world. In doing so, Morley announced that Miss World Limited would be making use of top South African designers to dress the contestants. Having been on an excursion of Johannesburg, Morley was also introduced to “African Romance” a locally based majority black-owned jewellery company. The company makes a unique luxurious African jewellery, which, Morley is hoping, will attract foreign interest as they will be using their jewellery to adorn the contestants. In 2006, African Romance spent about R40-million to set up its five-star facility in Sandton, Johannesburg. They bought over 4 000 rough diamonds, with about 30 of the stones being polished a day. For Morley, it is the culture and endless possibilities of Joburg that set the city apart. From the tourism experience to the economic and trade opportunities that business could also garner in the city. She said what distinguished the JTC’s bid from the rest was the passion with which they presented their bid. The Miss World event will be taking place fresh off the heels of the international soccer exhibition Soccerex 2008, taking place from the 23 - 26 November also in Johannesburg. Hosted by the Gauteng Province, Soccerex is the leading hub for the global football industry. Held over a four-day period, it provides unique networking platforms for delegates. Mahlangu said this would also come in handy, as the JTC will also be able to capitalise on using some of the set up networks, specifically the security that would have been organised for the event. Also in attendance at the press conference was the reigning Miss World 2008, Zi Lin Zhang – who is also the reigning Miss China. She too added to the chorus of praise for Johannesburg as the host city for the event, “ I’m happy and excited to be in Africa. I have been here a short while, but I already have beautiful memories of this country,” She said. Over the past year, Zi Lin Zhang has had the opportunity to attend several charity functions in over 15 countries, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. But she says of all events that she’s taken part in, coming to South Africa has been the best, as she dreamt about the country, even without knowing that one day she would have the opportunity to visit it. Preparations are well under-way to turn the Sandton convention centre into a swirl of glitz and glamour for the international community coming to attend the two-hour long event. In the words of Julia Morley, “The show we are going to have here will be the best.”

Oohs! and Aahs! filled the air as Genesis Fashion Rhythm unfolded as the sun went down last Sunday at the Promenade Gardens, here in the city.
The fashion show, presented by Accolade Awards (the Music Awards of Guyana), highlighted clothing that could be worn to the upcoming Accolade Awards and showed off formal and semiformal clothing for both males and females.

Michelle Cole-Rose, the official designer of the Accolade Awards, said that it was her job to make sure Guyanese were fashionably dressed for the Music Awards and that task included producing the Genesis Fashion Rhythms show. Her label, ‘Cole Facts’ was presented. Other prestigious designers featured in the show included international designer Mr. Roger Gary, Ms. Olympia Small, Ms. Vaski Harlequin and Ms. Pat Coates.
Guests were delighted as they recognised the familiar faces of local celebrities and television personalities. Models included Ms. Tamika Marshall, Ms. Celeste David and Ms. Charmaine Blackman.

Strutting their stuff and representing the males were Burchmore Simon (Chairman of AccoladeAwards) and Kerwyn Bollers from the popular Hits and Jams Productions. Also representing the men and delighting the female guests were Evening News Editor Paul McAdam, Adrian Dutchin and Jomo of X2, and Brandon Carter modelling tailored outfits by Herman and Sons.
One of two special invitees, Carter is a Fitness Model/Recording Artiste who featured in the Designer Akademic advertising campaign. The other special invitee was Katrina Nunez, a model who has been featured on the American reality show Project Runaway.

Cole-Rose said that the Genesis Fashion Rhythm was hosted in the Promenade Gardens because of the allegorical connections to the Garden of Eden. She stated, “I think of myself as an individual. I try to excel and be the best that I can be”.
Gary commended Trevor Rose (CEO and Co-Owner of Facts and Roses) who is the husband of Cole-Rose. “I gave kudos to Trevor for innovative use of the runway”.
Outfits were auctioned at the show for the benefit of the Let the Music Flow foundation, a fund set up to benefit young musicians and contribute to the revitalisation of the nation’s music industry.

Clay Aiken appears on the cover of the latest People magazine holding his infant son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline: "Yes, I'm Gay."
The 29-year-old former "American Idol" runner-up, multiplatinum recording artist and Broadway star credits his son, conceived by in-vitro fertilization with friend and producer Jaymes Foster, with making him realize that he could no longer hide his homosexuality from the world.
"It was the first decision I made as a father," Aiken told the magazine, which arrives on newsstands Friday. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."
Aiken, who rose to fame on "Idol" in 2003, has long been the subject of rumors and tabloid fodder that he was gay, but usually refused to acknowledge them. In an interview with The Associated Press two years ago, he said of the talk: "I don't really feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and the people I love."
Aiken said he only told his family that he was gay four years ago. He recalled a tearful discussion with his mother in a car after dropping off his brother, who was being sent to Iraq, at a military base.
"It was dark. I was sitting there, thinking to myself. I don't know why I started thinking about it ... I just started bawling. She made me pull over the car and it just came out," he said. "She started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she was very supportive and very comforting."
Aiken said his mother "still struggles with things quite a bit, but she's come a long way."
The magazine cover features Aiken holding his son, who was born in August. The baby's mother is Aiken's record producer, whom he met while performing on "Idol."
Aiken, who considers himself a born-again Christian, said he knows he may turn off some fans — known as Claymates — with his admission and his decision to have a child outside traditional marriage.
"I've never intended to lie to anybody at all," he said. "But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."
Gay groups applauded Aiken's public admission.
"We congratulate Clay for making this decision and for setting an example for others and his family," said Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. As we're seeing, more and more gay people, including celebrities, are living openly and honestly, and this has tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance."
Aiken recently released the CD "On My Way Here." He made his Broadway debut this spring in "Monty Python's Spamalot."

Can you become friends after the break-up?

Yes and no. Sure we all know couples who are tighter after they split up but this is a rare situation and I personally think that these types of friendships still harbor unresolved issues from the relationship that make it so that neither party is ready or able to fully move on. While being openly hostile to an ex also demonstrates unresolved issues/feelings and an inability to move forward, being buddy-buddy with a former flame is not as mature and civilized as it may seem on the surface. That said it is more than possible, and the most desirable thing, if you and an ex can reach a place of peaceful co-existence and mutual respect. Being at the same party and having fun with and without each other = good. Showing up at a party together, hanging out together al night and only having fun because you are together = bad. See the difference? It is normal to be friendly, even friends, but it is not normal to be as together as you were when coupled only no longer officially be a couple. In befriending an ex there are a few things you must accept; it is going to take time, it won’t be easy, there will be conflicts in the friendship that arise because you were once more than friends, you can’t and shouldn’t want to be best friends, at some point you or your ex will feel uncomfortable when there is a new romance in the air for one or both of you, a too close friendship with an ex will likely cause problems in your next relationship, and that you broke up as a couple for good reasons, reasons that may still come up as issues in a friendship. If you can let go entirely of this person as an ex, and think of them only as a friend then you may be able to build something new together, but if you still see them as “your ex” this will always taint the friendship. How will you know if you’ve reached that magical point of really being “just friends?” Simple, when somebody asks you about your ex your answer will NOT being with the words “My ex…” but instead will begin with the words “My friend…”. If your first knee-jerk response to any inquiry about your ex has you thinking the way you would about any of your other friends than you have reached that magical point of truly and honestly befriending an ex. Good for you!

Diwali is a reminder to us, forgotten in the past years in Guyana, that Mother Lakshmi is manifested in every women, regardless of her age or her marital status or her looks or her physical abilities. Diwali reminds us of our humanity, and of the qualities on which we will be judged. The Miss Diwali pageant promotes a set of values about glamour and elegance and it makes young women the objects of such pursuits.
To my astonishment businesses are supporting this upcoming event even though it has nothing to do with the real significance of Diwali. The committee is focusing more on women dressed up and paraded on a stage rather than the spiritual aspect of Diwali, and if this continues in years to come the real meaning of Diwali would gradually fade away.There are many other cultural and educational events in mandirs and schools, in which all persons, regardless of their gender or age can participate.
We therefore call on the organisers and their supporters to desist from using Diwali as a basis for this event and our Lakshmis not to be carried away by the materialistic things that will be offered. Men hit on hotties despite their own unattractiveness, study confirms

"You're prettier than I am," Seth Rogen's character drunkenly slurs to Katherine Heigl at one point in the 2007 movie "Knocked Up." Now a new study confirms what most of us have known all along: Men, no matter how unattractive, think they’ve got a chance with beautiful women.

It’s a rule, bartender Karen Brody says: The schlubbier the guy, the more likely he is to persistently pursue a pretty woman.
Brody — a lithe, slender Woodstown, N.J., bartender who looks at least a decade younger than her 47 years — recalls the time she was being "entertained" by a paunchy trucker with several missing front teeth. As the night wore on, he slumped to one side and eventually toppled off his barstool. When she raced around to make sure he was OK, the plump patron immediately resumed his pick-up patter — from the floor.
Apparently, the pudgy trucker isn't just an aberration, and the come-ons aren't just the after-effects of alcohol. A new study confirms what women say they've known all along: Men, no matter how unattractive, think they’ve got a chance with a runway model.

The proof was in the matchmaking Web site HOTorNOT.com, a site where members rate each others' "hotness." The site offered a treasure trove of data: It contained information not only on dating habits of its members, but also on the members’ opinions of their own attractiveness and the "hotness" of potential dates, according to a study published in a recent issue of Psychological Science.
Researchers studied ratings and dating information from 16,550 members during a 10-day period in 2005. All members studied were heterosexual, with 75 percent males and 25 percent female.
Using this data, they determined that the physical attractiveness of a potential mate was more important to men than women. And men were less likely than women to think that their own lack of attractiveness — based both on a self assessment and the ratings of others — should stand in the way of a date with someone "hot."
Maybe men think women have all read "The Frog Prince" and taken it to heart, allowing us to look past an ugly exterior in the search for inner beauty. Or perhaps it’s that men have internalized the messages in the popular media: movies like "Knocked Up," where the slacker hero lands a beautiful babe, or TV shows like "According to Jim," in which a difficult, slobby guy is coupled with a gorgeous wife.
The lead author of the study, Leonard Lee, an assistant professor at Columbia’s Graduate School of Business, thinks these far-fetched movie and TV couples might explain why unfortunate-looking men tend to hold out such high hopes. But he wonders whether the unattractive guys eventually learn that their chances are slim regardless of what they see on screen. There’s another important finding in the study, he says: The 10s among us, both male and female, want only to date other 10s.
There are hints in the HOTorNOT.com data that suggest men do learn to accept their limitations: They apparently hedge their bets by asking for more dates. In fact, the men in the study requested a full 240 percent more dates than the women. Researchers didn't look at how many of these online come-ons were successful, but the number of dates most men asked for might be a sign that the less attractive among us — even the men — recognize that they may have to settle for dating someone who is closer to them on the "hotness" scale.
"Good looking people are always looking for other good looking people," says Helen Fisher, a professor at Rutgers University who studies mating behavior and romantic love.
"And ultimately, men figure their own good looks are not as important as a woman’s," says Fisher, who wasn't involved with the study. "They figure they’re selling a whole lot of things that women want that aren’t associated with being attractive."

Besides, from an evolutionary perspective, men are simply looking for the woman most likely to produce a strong healthy baby — so that means they’re often focused on physical attractiveness.
"Men might as well reach for the stars," says William Pollack, a Harvard University psychologist and the director of the Center for Men and Young Men at McLean Hospital. "Women are the ones who are going to have the baby. They need to be a little more picky."
In the end, there might be some signs that boorish boys know they’re overreaching — and that may be expressed in the level of their braggadocio.
When a really attractive man is interested in a date, Brody says, he’s quieter and more cautious. "He’ll come back a bunch of times and try to get to know me before asking," she adds.

SYDNEY - For men, bliss is often just a mouse-click away while quality time with family is guaranteed to put a smile on women's faces, according to an Australian study of what makes people happy.
The "Happiness Index" study, which polled more than 8,500 Australians aged 18-64 years, showed rest and relaxation were the most enjoyable activities while physical exercise was least likely to make people happy.
"Australians are made happy on a week-to-week basis, not by possessions and achievements, but by entertaining experiences and by meaningful interactions with others," said Karen Phillips, managing director of The Leading Edge, the business consultancy that conducted the survey over a week in August."This index gives insight into the way we tick, with the results being useful to Australian businesses who want to better communicate with their customers," she added.Both men and women — or 63 percent of overall respondents — picked relaxation as the activity that made them happiest, but that is where the similarity between the sexes ends.
Just over half of men said happiness meant surfing the Internet, playing online games or accessing social network sites such as Facebook, compared with only 39 percent of women.
Fifty-five percent of women said having meals and spending time together as a family made them happiest, compared to 45 percent of men. Women are also more likely than men to have been made happy by their pets.More men than women, 48 percent versus 40 percent, found happiness being intimate with another person while 38 percent of men, and only 28 percent of women, said drinking with friends brought them joy.More women than men said reading a good book, eating comfort food or buying gifts made them happy.But Phillips said the survey also debunked several gender stereotypes, finding that shopping for new clothes and shoes made only 30 percent of women happy and that more men and women with children cited sex and romance as making them happy than singles.

Air quality test team finds asbestos at UG, forced to flee

A team began testing the air quality at the University of Guyana (UG) Turkeyen Campus on Friday, after the Education Ministry agreed to have that exercise undertaken, but the testers fled soon after when they found asbestos material on the ground.
Last Friday, a team headed by the contractor of the A&E Consultancy visited the campus to test the air. The team started work but quickly left the campus after members observed that there was asbestos material on the ground. The consultancy company was hired by the ministry following repeated requests by the UG Asbestos Technical Committee.
The ministry agreed to test air quality on the Turkeyen campus, but it is now refusing to have the floors of the affected buildings lacquered, which sources say is necessary to hold down unseen fibres. Sources yesterday told Stabroek News that advisors to Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, have staunchly opposed the lacquering of the floors. They are only in favour of painting of the walls, which has already begun. “But it is important that the floor be lacquered so as any asbestos fibre that maybe present will be paste down and not affect anyone,” a source said yesterday.
Reports are that the company has the equipment to conduct the test and it was the same company that was used to test the air at asbestos affected schools. After the air testing team left the campus, a ministry team visited to remove the asbestos material on the ground.
Yesterday they commenced painting the walls, but the air testing team has no intention of returning until the floors are lacquered as its members do not want to expose themselves to any danger.
Stabroek News understands that the further delay may affect the commencement of the new academic year and students and staff members are becoming worried.
Earlier this year Deputy Registrar of UG, Vincent Alexander, had announced that the $200 million exercise was expected to last two months and it would see asbestos removed from some 15 buildings at the Turkeyen Campus. The entire campus was shut down. The administrative staff was moved to the Dennis Irving dormitory at Goedverwagting and summer classes were held at the Tutorial High School. Library services are meanwhile being facilitated at the university’s office in Pere Street, Kitty.
The asbestos problem was highlighted in the news in the middle of last year following protests from staff members of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Hector Edwards, Head of Business and Management Studies, told this newspaper at the time that he and staff members were not prepared to continue working in their building as they were exposed to the asbestos.
He said the issue was pending for a number of years and the administration was doing nothing.After their protests, Edwards and his staff were moved to another building. The university administration then took samples and sent them to be tested at a Canadian laboratory, Resource Environmental Associates (REA), for confirmation last year.

Method of preparation for Samosa pastry:

First mix the flour and salt. Add four tbs of oil to it and mix it well. Add water and make stiff dough out of it. Add water slowly or you might ruin whole thing. Knead the dough till it becomes smooth. Keep the ball for minimum 30 minutes untouched in a plastic bag.

Method of preparation for Samosa stuffing:

First, peel the potatoes and cut it into small pieces. Keep it aside. Take a frying pan and add four tbs of oil to it. Heat it at medium flame. Add onion to it when oil is hot and fry it well till it turns brown. Add coriander, ginger, peas, green chili, and water to it. Cover it up and lower the heat. Keep it in this condition for few minutes till the peas are coked. Add more water if required. Now add garam masala, potatoes, salt, cumin, cayenne, coriander seeds and lemon juice to it. Stir it till it is cooked.

Method of preparation for Samosa:

You will have to knead the dough again for a minute. Now make small balls out of it. Roll the ball into round shape. Cut it into two halves. Now make cone out of it overlapping the seams. Fill the cone with stuffing and close it after applying little water at the edges.
Heat the oil in a frying pan. Oil should be deep enough to fry the samosa completely. Now fry the samosa in medium flame. Turn the samosa and fry it fully till golden brown. Enjoy it with sauce or chutney.

When Will UG Reopen?

The new academic year for the University of Guyana will commence later than is usual because the final stage of the asbestos removal is yet to be ironed out. Stabroek News understands that a high ranking meeting, involving all the major players at the university was held with Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, but no decision was taken on the way forward. Classes should have commenced at the institution next week. At issue is the quality testing of the air at the university following the removal of the dangerous material. Sources told Stabroek News that the university's Asbestos Technical Committee is strongly advising that a quality test of the air at the university be done. It is also calling for the floor of the affected buildings to be waxed and the walls painted to rule out the possibility of any of the asbestos material remaining on the surfaces. However, Baksh has also been reportedly advised by a team, headed by government engineer, Walter Willis, that the campus is safe; that everything was done correctly during the removal of the material and there is nothing to fear. It was also pointed out that no air test was done at the secondary schools where asbestos material was removed. However, sources said the normal regulation is that the air is tested following the removal of asbestos. "We are concerned about the 5,000 students and 600 staff members... We are concerned that a lot of young people's lives could be destroyed in their prime by being exposed to the cancerous material," one source said. The minister was informed that the equipment to test the air is available in Guyana and there is a local contractor who can get it done. Baksh is expected to study both reports and make a decision soon. Earlier this year Deputy Registrar of UG, Vincent Alexander, had announced that the $200 million exercise was expected to last two months and it would see asbestos being removed from some 15 buildings at the Turkeyen campus. The entire campus was shut down. The administrative staff was moved to the Dennis Irvine dormitory at Goedverwagting and summer classes were held at the Tutorial High School. Library services are being facilitated at the university's location in Pere Street, Kitty. The asbestos problem was highlighted in the news in the middle of last year following protests from staff members of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Hector Edwards, Head of Business and Management Studies, had told this newspaper that he and staff members were not prepared to continue working in their building as they were exposed to the asbestos. He had said the issue was pending for a number of years and the administration was doing nothing. After their protests, Edwards and his staff were moved to another building. The university administration then took samples and sent them to be tested at a Canadian laboratory, Resource Environmental Associates (REA), for confirmation during July 14-15, 2007.

Wearing a sexy leopard print dress with heels, Paris Hilton was on hand for the MTV VMA 2008 Press Conference held in Los Angeles, California on Thursday

(September 4). Besides putting in work for the big awards show (which takes place this Sunday, September 7), Miss Hilton is also readying for the big Toronto Film Festival premiere of the movie “Paris, Not France”.

According to press reports, “the hotel heiress is the focus of the movie, billed as a behind-the-scenes look at her life.”
Hilton is planning on attending the premiere on Tuesday, but has canceled two advance screenings in an attempt to create “more hype.”
Her rep Jason Moore told Page Six, “We wanted to create more buzz, create some hype. We felt the impact would be more extreme if we had one screening. She is a partner with the documentary and will be attending Tuesday’s screening in support of it.”

Even celebrities have their low points, and on Monday, August 18, 2008 Avril Lavigne looked a bit disheveled and downcast as she left Katsuya sushi restaurant in West Hollywood, California.
The “Girlfriend” songstress relied on the support of a gal pal as she made her way from the exit to an SUV that was waiting for her. Lavigne’s hubby Deryck Whibley followed shortly after in his black Porsche.

Perhaps Avril was lamenting the news that she may be banned from playing her August 29th show in the Malaysian Capitol city of Kuala Lumpur due to her “too sexy” image.
Malaysia’s Islamic opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party is trying to shut down the show, saying that she would promote the wrong values just before the country’s August 31 independence day holiday.
One party official told press, “It is considered too sexy for us. ... It’s not good for viewers in Malaysia. We don’t want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models.”

Lottery Ticket Swap

This one takes some pre-planning. All you have to do is buy someone a lotto ticket today and tomorrow go out early and buy another ticket with the exact same numbers as the winning ticket from yesterday. When the victim of your prank isn't paying attention swap the newer ticket with the old one. When the person looks in the paper for the winning numbers, he or she won't even realize the date is wrong on the ticket and will believe it is the big winner.

Bend Over Splits

Place a dollar bill on the floor and as people walk by and try to pick the dollar up, you stand nearby and tear a small piece of cloth. It will sound as if the victim of the prank actually split their pants and most of the time they will check their rear and leave in embarrasement.

Push or Pull

Print out some signs that read, "Push" and "Pull" and tape them to doors at your local stores. Make sure to place them on the wrong side. Then sit back and watch as people push when they are instructed to pull and vise versa

Shoe Polish Phone Prank

Coat the reciever of someone's phone with shoe polish and then give them a call. Instant gratification. Make sure you match the colors of the polish and the phone. Small amounts of shaving cream work too.

Upside Down Cup

Fill a cup with water about half way. Then place an index card over the cup. Then turn the cup upside down on your co-worker's desk. Finally, carefully slide the index card out from underneath the cup. Whenever your co-worker decides to pick the cup up, he will be drenched in water.
